about

Synthesizers simmer, voices reach for the sky, drums rattle and shake. Acoustic guitars hold tight to the reins, and the mystery of a new song slowly unravels. At once immense and reduced to scale.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The second solo project from Tomorrow Is Already Here—the moniker of Champaign, Illinois-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Garret Gengler—offers a cool, moody triptych of dreamy, lulling melodies and soothing, ethereal vocals. The dozen tracks on “Make Believe” conjure the likes of Five for Fighting, with an electro pop-folk instrumental signature and lyrics that explore specific places and moments in time. Gengler sums it up as: “The power of making your own reality. Each song captures a place, a person at a moment where they are building a life, dealing with heavy things, while trying to stay as childlike as possible.”

Tomorrow Is Already Here is packed with the ambition of Gengler’s drive to commandeer a one-man shop: He wrote, arranged, recorded and mixed all tracks, while playing guitars, lending a hand to percussion and singing lead vocals and background harmonies. As a result, “Make Believe” possesses steady continuity as a transcendent, even ghostlike journey inside the mind of our musical muse and guide. Tomorrow already looks brighter.—CT
